Albuquerque, New Mexico • 1019 Guadalupe Court NW Studio #5
www.alamedastudiotour.com
Nestled in Albuquerque’s north valley is the historic village of Alameda. This area was the center of the Alameda Land Grant in the 17th century. Originally a farming community of handcrafted adobe homes surrounded by irrigated fields, Alameda retains much of its original character today. On the side streets, like Guadalupe Trail, you will often find yourself on narrow dirt and gravel roads which lead to rustic adobe houses, horse and cattle pastures, apple orchards and brilliant green alfalfa fields. Hidden in the rural beauty are many artisans eager to share their creativity.
The Alameda area is bordered on the east by the railroad tracks that originally helped to bring New Mexico into the modern age. To the north lie the lands of Sandia Pueblo. The famous Rio Grande, New Mexico’s lifeblood, forms the western border of Alameda, and the historic village of Los Ranchos roughly forms Alameda’s southern boundary.
Alameda is home to many established and emerging fine artists and skilled craftspeople. In 2011, a group of these artists got together and formed the first annual Alameda Studio Tour. Twenty-five artists opened their studios to the public, inspiring, educating, and offering their work for sale. The event experienced great success, and in 2012 and 2013 the tour has grown to 36 artists with even better sales due to more advertising! 2014 promises to continue that trend.
The artists participating in the Tour include both traditional and abstract painters, sculptors, fiber artists, printmakers, weavers, jewelers, glass artists, and doll makers. The diversity of artisans and the natural, historic beauty of Alameda is what sets this studio tour apart from others. For example, where else can you visit an alpaca farm, where the wool from the animals is spun and woven into wearable art, while two blocks away you can visit a world-class glass and mosaic artisan who has studied in the Vatican glassworks. In addition, several artists will share space at the same location, offering a multi-artist experience for visitors.
Sue Orchant will be showing at the studio of Jeff Potter, along with Tricia Simmons, Jackie Anderson, & Steve Wentworth.
